Second command: (define "bits" "binary digits")

If someone argues that humans can repeat the same task for 100 times without a single mistake, that someone has never tried it himself nor seen anyone try it.
If someone claims that humans can deliver a message across the Pacific Ocean on foot in less than a second, that someone is crazy.
Humans can't.
However, Computer, the most salient huamn invention of the century, can.

Computer at its beginning stages, of course, was not the machine of perfection, of accuracy, of simplicity. Its tubes were boiling hot and gigantic, and they could carry out only few meagre tasks with the help of several people-especially women with fine dexterity and attentiveness.
Back then, computers used the "binary digit system" which expresses every character as codes with only 0 and 1. The alphabet A would be coded as 1000001, for example. Two students in CSC104 did a demonstration of communicating with this binary digit system and proved the system to be time-consuming and prone to errors. Luckily, people devised a better system for computers, and now, computers can deliver abundant amount of information at an incredible speed.
With the recent computer program, Dr. Racket, we can easily create and manipulate images using some codes and definition. Also, we can repeat a complicated task over and over again without making mistakes.

In the third lecture of CSC104, I learned how computers can make our lives more simple and less repetitive. At first, using "definition" to prevent repetition of the same command looked alienating but trying the command on Dr. Racket on my own helped me learn the command quickly.
Also, the Racket videos that Prof. Heap posts on the course website was an excellent guide. I could pick up other commands that were not thoroughly explained during the lecture.
While learning the history of computer and the functions of Dr.Racket program, I am also learning to become more logical and better at problem-solving.

  1. Ji Soo, I really enjoyed reading your post. I like your deep observation about computers that we often take for granted. Lovely!

  2. Logic and problem-solving are two keywords for computer science. It's good you found that out and you are actually using what you are learning in this course to improve the way you are solving problems. I'm glad you find the course useful!

Eleventh command: (problem solving (counting pennies))

Today was a extremely productive day. I finally completed the project 2 which I had been delaying until the last minute and handed it in before the deadline. Two other people from my class cooperated with me in finishing up the project. We went to the office hour on Thursday but felt that there were not enough TAs to help out the students. We stumbled over the check-expects and asked the TA in the lab for a hint but her explanation rather confused us than help us solve the problem. Nevertheless, after labourious hours of attempts, all the tests were passed. The last problem we had was manipulation of the base size of the triangle in the fractal project. I tried changing the definition of the sierpinski function, and then, I could manipulate the base size of the triangle by pressing keys. I was working with my classmate, Jiwon http://jiwoncsc104.blogspot.ca/ , to finish the problem solving project. We chose the penny piles problem and tried to work on our own at first. H...

Eight command: (string-reverse "mid-term 2")

This Thursday, I had the second midterm test for the computer science course. Since I'd crammed all the information the night before for the last test, this time, I tried to study more regularly and plan things ahead of time. I guess my strategy and effort paid well enough. The cheat sheet really helped me study for the test and helped me during the test. After this test, I was confident about the result and had fewer questions to ask. The first mid-term had some questions on things that were covered in the course but were paid minimal attention during the lectures. However, this mid-term felt really like a fair game. I would still be unsure and curious about the result until the mark comes out, but I'm more hopeful.

Fifth command: (map add-intelligence (list brain1 brain2 brain3))

I got back my term test few days ago. The result was better than I imagined and I imagined the worst I could ever get. My answers to those questions that I was uncertain about during the test were wrong. The professor posted the possible answers for the test on the website, and it helped me greatly with some questions. Next time, I'll do better. This week, we learned how to manipulate the three basic colours of an image, how to add or submit from each unit in a list of numbers and words, and referring to a unit in a list of images. I found manipulating image a fascinating task. Watching an exotic and multi-coloured lizard turn into a boring green and grey animal was interesting. By the way, in the videos that the Prof posted, there were operations that can turn a normal image into image with only one colour. That particular operation seemed quite complex and fun, and I hoped the prof could have explained it during today's lecture. If he doesn't expl...
